The Bechdel Test, for those of you who are unaware, is the simplest of simpleness litmus test intended to show the sexist representations of (cisgender, generally heterosexual) women in popular hollywood cinema.
The Test is as follows:
1. Does the feature have at least two named women in it?
2. Do the women talk to each other?
3. About something other than a man?
Here, I would like to point out some great failings of this gender acid test. The test is problematic in that it is a) solely concerned with “women” or “men” in cis standards, and b) it allows for “dubious” passes, such as in the case of Bridesmaids.Moving on, some guy decided to go to the movies each week to see the new releases, solely for the purposes of conducting a year long study into the films of 2012, and how they fare in the Bechdel Test. Here are some findings so far:
- There is a 63% failure rate overall since week one of 2012
- Only one week so far in which there were more passes than fails. That was week of feb 10th.
- Per week there has been on average average 3 passes 5 fails.
- 20% of passes were classed as “dubious” passes, which changes everything.
So. This is the state of cinema today. And that is only data for cis women, who I am assuming are straight and am also assuming are white and able bodied, which lets face it are infinitely more represented, and fairly so at that, than WOC, non-cisgender people, Sexuality minorities etc.
God only knows what the race, ablity, sexuality, trans* equivalent test results are. It honestly doesn’t bare thinking about.
Lets all become film makers and shake it up to really represent the truth for once.
I wouldn’t actually call myself a feminist (for various reasons) but, yep. This is it.
If I think about it, even I, as a woman, have seen women as inferior. It came to my mind when I realized most of my role-models are male. I actually LACK awesome women in my life, especially those represented by the media. YOU JUST RARELY SEE ANY!
Since I’ve exploring the “feminist” side of tumblr, I slowly can change my views,… I think it still needs time, but I already have a lot of awesome women on my dash, which is fantastic!
